UNET joins the fediverse with ActivityPub

UNET

UNET 3.0.0 speaks ActivityPub. Your public posts can reach the fediverse, and people on Mastodon and similar apps can follow you at @[email protected].

UNET 3.0.0 ships ActivityPub support for everyone. That means UNET is part of the fediverse: the open network of servers that talk to each other with the same protocol Mastodon, Pixelfed, and many other apps already use.

If you wanted a privacy-first social app that still connects to the wider open web of follows and public posts, this is that step.

What works today

With ActivityPub on UNET you can:

  • Be followed from Mastodon, Pixelfed, and other ActivityPub apps
  • Publish public posts that federate out of UNET
  • Receive replies, likes, and reposts from the fediverse on those public posts
  • Be found with a normal fediverse address: @[email protected]

You do not need a second account on another server just to exist in that network. Your UNET username is the handle.

How to follow a UNET account from the fediverse

  1. Open your Mastodon (or other ActivityPub) app.
  2. Search for @[email protected] (replace username with the real UNET name).
  3. Follow the profile the same way you follow anyone else on the fediverse.

Public posts from that account can show up in your home timeline like any other remote profile.

What stays inside UNET

A few boundaries matter, and we are stating them plainly:

  • Direct messages do not federate. DMs stay local inside UNET. There is no ActivityPub DM bridge.
  • Groups are not part of this release. Group features are not exposed over ActivityPub.

Public social graph and public posts are the federation surface. Private conversation stays on UNET.

That split matches how a lot of people already use the fediverse: publish in the open, keep private chat somewhere they trust.

Why bother

UNET already does the boring privacy stuff: username-only accounts, ad-free feed, DMs that stay on the app. ActivityPub does not redo that story. It just means your public posts are not locked inside one closed network anymore.

You can keep using UNET as the place you actually hang out, and still show up when someone on Mastodon searches @[email protected].

If you want to try it

Update to 3.0.0 (or install fresh), pick a username, then send people @[email protected]. From their Mastodon client it should look like any other remote profile.

If all you care about is private chat, nothing changes: DMs still do not leave UNET. Federation is for the public side.
